Track ballast forms the trackbed upon which railroad ties (sleepers) are laid. It is packed between, below, and around the ties. It is used to bear the load from the railroad ties, to facilitate drainage of water, and also to keep down vegetation that might interfere with the track structure. Ballast also holds the track in place as the trains roll over it.

There are 3 track lighting types on the market, namely Halo Track System (HT), Juno Track System (JT), and Lightolier Track System (LT). They are basically all functional equivalent system, excepts for the availability and cost. HT is more common and cost less, while JT and LT are less common and cost more due to less competition from vendors.

Steel slag ballast prices vary somewhat in different project areas, but are comparable to those of other types of aggregates at the plants. Overall ballast costs, of course, must include maintenance and labor (NSA, 2015).Fig. 8.7 shows steel slag ballast used in a railroad track.
