Tantalite - Wikipedia

Tantalite occurs in granitic pegmatites that are rich in rare-earth elements, and in placer deposits derived from such rocks. It has been found in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia (Guainía and Vichada), Egypt, northern Europe, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, The Democratic Republic of Congo, the United States (California, Colorado, Maine, and ia), and Zimbabwe.

The more famous Tantalite species from this locality is Stibiotantalite, and this honestly might be the first Tantalite- (Mn) that we've had to offer in the auctions from this mine. This miniature sized piece is sharp, well-formed, fairly thick, prismatic crystal of dark reddish-black Tantalite- (Mn), free of matrix.

Tantalite is the most widespread tantalum mineral and makes for an important ore of the industrially useful metal. Tantalum is used in alloys for strength and higher melting points, in glass to increase the index of refraction, and in surgical steel, as it is non-reactive and non-irritating to body tissues.

Aluminum (Al), tantalum (Ta), niobium (Nb), titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), hafnium (Hf) and other metals can form a fine, highly isolative oxide currently, the only three metals in practical application are aluminum, tantalum and niobium.

Niobium and tantalum are transition metals that are almost always found together in nature because they have very similar physical and chemical properties. Their properties of hardness, conductivity, and resistance to corrosion largely determine their primary uses today. The leading use of niobium (about 75 percent) is in the production of high-strength steel alloys …

Tantalum ore has characteristically grades of about 0.03% Ta 2 O 5, generally as a co-product of cassiterite and other minerals. Note that because of facile overgrinding, metallurgical recovery of columbite by crushing and milling hard-rock ore is often as low as 50%. Tantalum is silvery grey, heavy and very hard but malleable and ductile.

Tantalum Coating. Tantalizing is a thermo-chemical diffusion process used to provide corrosion resistance to metals in highly corrosive environments. The process puts a uniform layer of tantalum onto the surface of the substrate, allowing it to act with the same properties as pure tantalum metal. When the tantalum reacts with oxygen, it forms a ...

Combining official production data for 1965–2013 with best estimates of older production (Puustinen, 2003), the main feldspar (+ quartz + in some cases small amounts of beryl, columbite, tantalite, etc.) ore-mining regions in Finland are ranked by Puustinen as follows:Kimito Island, southwest Finland: 5.82 Mt pegmatite (diverse quarries) and (pegmatitic) granite (Kyrkoberget) …

A truly rare and good quality specimen from a locality that is not well-known outside of Southern California. This piece is simply labeled as "Tantalite", but the only Tantalite species reported from this locality is Stibiotantalite, so I feel safe in assuming that this is the case for this piece, but it has not been analyzed to confirm this guess.

10 Important Uses of Niobium. Niobium is a rare metal with a high melting point, silvery gray color, soft texture, and good ductility. The density of niobium is 8.57g / cm³, the melting point is 2477 ° C, and the boiling point is 4744 ° C. Thanks to its good superconductivity, high melting-point, corrosion resistance and wear resistance, niobium is widely used in production and life.
